AI Mail Support for Thunderbird was born as an experimental project to bring the potential of Large Language Models into a practical, everyday context like email. The goal was not to create “yet another AI plugin,” but a flexible solution that could truly adapt to different use cases.

Unlike similar solutions, the add-on was designed with a modular architecture capable of integrating with a heterogeneous set of LLMs, both proprietary and open-source, with particular attention to open solutions and, where possible, self-hosted ones, to ensure maximum privacy protection.

The integration with the Thunderbird email client further reinforces these principles and fits naturally into complex professional scenarios, such as managing multiple email accounts and significant communication volumes. In these contexts, AI model support becomes a concrete tool for optimizing time and improving communication quality, while remaining perfectly integrated into the workflow.

The interface was designed to fit into the user’s workflow non-invasively, offering assistance at three key moments:

• Reading analysis: Quick access in the preview window allows summarizing long threads or extracting key points from complex emails.
• Writing support: During composition, the AI acts as an editorial assistant, helping to draft messages, adjust tone, or translate content in real time.
• Granular editing: Through the context menu, it’s possible to work on specific portions of selected text for targeted refinements or immediate clarifications.

Each interaction returns output in a dedicated pop-up that adapts based on the output type (text, audio, or charts), designed not to interrupt navigation in the client while maintaining focus on the current task.

The extension is not tied to a single vendor: it natively supports the main industry providers, including Claude, GPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), and Grok (xAI), ensuring access to the most performant models available on the market.

The real added value, especially for professionals more attentive to data management, lies in the support for EU-driven solutions like Mistral and, more generally, for open models run self-hosted through tools like Ollama and LM Studio.
All of this, however, with the awareness that using local models requires SIGNIFICANT hardware resources.

Particular attention was paid to the configuration of different LLM providers, available in a dedicated section, in order to enhance the specific characteristics of each model while maintaining a clear, consistent, and easy-to-use interface.
